"Rebecca has chosen to place the notion of anticipation at the heart of her work. It’s the excitement of going out, the heart beating at the thought of being with other people, the desire to float to the music after months of confinement is increasingly felt. You can hear the music in the distance, that incessant boom boom that grows the closer you get. The lights are on, ready to welcome an audience that has been contained for months... This is the moment that Rebecca wanted to immortalise, at a time when June was still synonymous with deconfinement. (…)

Through a mixture of photography and video, Rebecca wishes to suggest to visitors that state of excitement which precedes going to a club, when one has not set foot on the dancefloor for months: photographing and setting in motion the light ambiences of a room which is still empty, ready to welcome its public imminently, recalling those minute details which feed the pleasure of sharing the same music, the same emotions, are all creative processes which allow Rebecca to express the notion of anticipation. At the same time, Rebecca portrays the emptiness, the absurdity of these spaces between people when they wait to enter a club, while the purpose of the party is precisely to bring people together and exchange, which reminds us of this new way of living imposed by the Covid era. In order to encourage immersion and make this feeling even more tangible, the artist has deliberately chosen to display her photos in life size, giving the space a resemblance of a club entrance..”

“Bien que l’acte photographique soit aujourd’hui pléthorique – tout le monde photographie tout –, les clichés qui en résultent n’ont jamais été aussi éphémères dans leur existence. Forte de ce constat, Rebecca Bowring s’interroge sur la présence physique de l’image photographique. Sa recherche porte autant sur l’objet matériel proprement dit – comment il est donné à voir –, que sur ce qui est donné à voir, sans distinction de catégorie. Cette ouverture, elle la doit à son exploration du processus photographique lors de ses études à Vevey, puis à la HEAD-Genève, ainsi qu’aux multiples reportages et projets personnels effectués en parallèle et en brouillant les frontières entre mandats et pratiques artistiques personnelles.

La série Nullen Void, travail de commande pour l’Electron festival, est à ce titre significative. Il s’agissait de documenter la réouverture des clubs musicaux en été 2020, après leur cruel  confinement. Immédiatement à l’œuvre, Rebecca Bowring observe les files d’attente et la distanciation entre les personnes, imposée par les normes de contrôle, avec le marquage au sol pour aider à son respect. Finalement, elle réalise le portrait de cet espace qui isole chaque individu, pour mettre en exergue ce vide, rendu encore plus prégnant par les tirages grandeur nature. Elle invite le public à occuper cet intervalle par une présence réelle, à devenir partie intégrante de la série. En troublant ainsi la séparation entre espace de représentation et réalité de l’espace, en impliquant le spectateur, Rebecca Bowring rejoue les propriétés du photographique, prompt à perturber – voire à abolir – la distance entre le réel et sa représentation.” Myriam Poiatti
