Knowing Thunder Gives Away What Lightning Tries to Hide, 2020

Lorsque le confinement a commencé à s'étendre dans nos consciences et dans nos vies, j'étais étonnée de la familiarité que je ressentais face à cet état de séparation avec les amis, la famille, et la vie telle que je la connaissais. C’était comme si j'en avais déjà connu le sentiment.

J’ai utilisé le temps que le confinement nous a offert pour trier des images prises quelques années auparavant avec un appareil argentique. Avec le recul je remarquais qu’elles représentaient à la fois un sentiment d’enfermement et une recherche d’évasion. Je me suis rendue compte que prendre ces photos était une façon de respirer, une manière de se détacher de situations impossibles pour échapper au contrôle de mon partenaire.

Les images préexistantes entourant le sujet de la violence domestique ne représentent pas ce que je vivais. Je ne m’identifiais pas aux bleus, aux côtes brisées, au sang qui coule. À travers ce projet, je propose un autre regard sur la représentation photographique des violences domestiques. J’ai collé certaines de mes photos à l’intérieur d’une maison et je les ai photographiées à nouveau pour représenter visuellement mon expérience émotionnelle. J’y ai ajouté d’autres photos telles quelles, pour appeler à l’incertitude et représenter les sentiments multiples et complexes, parfois contradictoires, qu’implique le fait d'être confiné par une relation toxique. Solitude, adaptation permanente, effacement de soi, pour ne pas provoquer le tonnerre qui n’est jamais loin.

“Rebecca Bowring’s work addresses a topic which is almost impossible to convey with photography: her own experience of domestic violence. Rather than restaging past episodes of which no image exists, she uses photography in a subtle but powerful way to examine the feeling of isolation brought by violence, and to revisit how making images provided her with a temporary escape. Knowing what the photographs are referring to invites us to a somber but deeply engaging understanding of them, where every small detail can become a metaphor for violence and destruction, which furthermore hints at how widespread this form of violence is, and all too often concealed and unspoken. The tension lies within the images but also on the surfaces where the artist has placed them.”

We understand that the emotions are strong, but it has been quietly conveyed. We know that through the pandemic, there has been an abrupt increase in domestic violence. Lockdown and isolation have made the home situation unbearable for many. Rebecca Bowring highlights an important and painful topic in a careful and vulnerable way that makes a mark.”
